Eco-thinking...

I had been invited by Redress to a Design Academy seminar they were hosting with ecochic design award and the British Council about Sustainable Fashion. The event was to educate designers and students on how to be more eco-friendly when designing and making garments. Two of the speakers I found particularly interesting, the first of which builds her collections from 'waste' fabrics/garments of the other companies and creates new designs from them. Orsola de Castro formed 'From Somewhere' in 1997 and her approach to designing within the limits of the fabrics she scavenges was inspiring as well as eco friendly!

I was especially keen to hear the final speaker which was blogger Geneva of A Pair and a Spare. Her segment was discussing 'Reconstruction' and she showed some of her DIY projects that she had done as well as her top ten tips to upcycle/reconstruct old and found clothes:
  1. Get Involved - don't be scared!
  2. Be Inspired - check out whats hot and on trend
  3. Know your fabrics
  4. Adjust the silhouette
  5. Change the length
  6. Embellishment - Sham Shui Po is a great resource
  7. Finish - make it look like a shop bought garment

It was an very inspiring morning.
Now, where can I get a sewing machine...
