Leaving the digital grind behind...for now.

flamingos in kowloon park, TST

Don't you love the feeling when you go to pick up your photos that have been developed? (rare to do this these days i guess) I had such a feeling when I picked up these. I had the roll in my camera for about 3months...it was almost like it was a never ending roll. I had forgotten what photos I had taken, so it was a pleasant surprise flicking through them. I used my amazing Pentax to take these shots using the Lomo Redscale Film that I spoke about here
Its perfect for the sunny days HK has been having (between the thunderstorms) and it sure makes me love HK a little more.

The Little Black Jacket

Hong Kong was fortunate enough to be one of the places that Karl Lagerfeld's 'The little black jacket' exhibition stopped. Along with the help of Carine Roitfeld, Karl photographed models, celebrities and muses in the infamous Chanel jacket.
Although it was not on the scale as the traveling Chanel quilted bag exhibition it was still an interesting insight to the world of the the little black jacket.

Home from Home

When vintage hunting for vic&lily I often come across the weird and bizarre. What I found yesterday proved to be the strangest (in the best way) one yet...

Scotland embroidered onto a blouse!
Why there is grapes in the centre baffles me. What I do love is the name on the label. Couldn't get more Scottish.

Nice when you find a little piece of home from home.

ps. I didn't buy it...should I have done?

July 1st...

Protester at the HKSAR Protest

Back in 1997 Hong Kong was handed back to China. 15 years later HK still celebrate becoming a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China with a public holiday and an impressive firework display on the harbour. What I wasn't aware of (I have been here for almost 5years) is that on the 1st July every year since the handover there has been protests against it. Today in the muggy weather I took my camera down to the centre of the protests in Causeway Bay and took a few snaps. It was quite a sight to behold, something I wasn't prepared for. There was literally thousands of people slowly marching through the streets between trams to voice their dislike of the HKSAR. One gentleman I spoke to told me that every year over half a million take to the streets to protest against the corruption. I was proud to witness this and support it...I joined the crowds for part of the way...there may have been some barrier jumping to get out. It was hot in there!

Drumming as a form of Protest outside the Regal Hotel, Causeway Bay

Stationary Trams amongst protestors

Quite a lot of excitement for a Sunday afternoon.

Hope you are having a good weekend.

For better, for worse...

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the wedding of a friend of mine which took place last night in a grand Banquet Hall in TST. As this was a Chinese wedding I knew I was about to indulge in a 13 course meal...I made sure not to wear any tight fitting garments, I learned from my previous school boy errors. The favourite course of the evening for me was the fish, although it looked a little scary it was delicious. Although I was watching a touching video of the bride and groom getting ready at the same time so this perhaps clouded my judgement. Over the course of the evening the bride changed her outfit several times (I saw her in 4) complete with new hair, make-up and jewellery. This is not something many a western bride would do.
As I was one of only two 'ghosts' at the wedding I couldn't really understand what was being said (I really must learn Cantonese) but actions speak a thousands words and I was thankful that I was part of their 'Big Day'.

Phoenix J. Dress and customary 'Red Pocket' for the happy couple.

The happy couple (outfit 1), cheers! (outfit 2), special wedding beer and the scary yet yummy fish.

Congratulations Suki and John!

Hot hot hot

The weather in Hong Kong is heating up. Not that I'm complaining. I'm happy when the sun is shining.
Even more so when I see that even these little guys need a hat to keep them cool...

VM does ARTHK12

For the past few weeks I have been helping the lovely peeps (thats you DF) at the ARTHK promote this years art fair. It has been happening all weekend and today I got my chance to take a peek inside.
There was a whole host of things to see from the very bizarre to the beautiful.
Here are a few of my favourites...

Even though I can't afford these works of art they have inspired me to create some of my own.
How about you?

Alice through the Diana glass

You may remember my post about the bunting and cakes I made for a tea party I was going to (can be found here) well, I took along my Diana CMYK and these are the crazy double, triple maybe even quadruple exposure shots that I got back the other day.

see the little faces?

The highlight of the party was definitely the egg and spoon race...I was clearly robbed of a win I tell you! Victoria Peak Gardens were a little eerie that day as there was some low cloud creating a very mystical atmosphere especially when the sun started to go down. We weren't spooked though as we managed to scoff all the cakes, drink punch from tea cups and play games.
All in all the party was a success.
Hooray!

Alice vs The White Rabbit...

Can't wait for my next themed party....ideas?

How I spent my morning.

One of the best things about being in Hong Kong as a designer is the endless (or what appears to be) supplies of buttons, fabrics and all things shiny.
I had to make a trip to ShamShuiPo, the district devoted to trims and fabrics to pick up supplies I needed. What I love most though is not the newest button but the old signage, the crowds bustling around junk stalls and my new favourite the pawn shops.
The locals draw me quizzical looks as they don't quite see why I am so fascinated in something so old and tarnished.
I can't help it, I'm a sucker for history. How about you?

The weekend...

The forecast for the weekend was much like all of last week.
Rain.
Rain.
And more rain with thunderstorms.

BUT

Luckily we were blessed with a break in the bleak weather and the sun came out.
Below is a few snap shots I managed to take of my goings on this weekend.
I am excited about selling my 'u p c y c l e d' vintage clothing. It's been a fun project to work on.

Happy Monday!

Rain running...

Decided to go for a run this morning. Little did I know that I would be caught in the rain. It was ok though, the rain managed to cool me down and slightly lessen the colour of red on my face.

Party time!

Today I will be spending my time at a Mad-Hatter's themed party on the top of Victoria Peak. In preparation I spent yesterday making easy peasy chocolate cakes and some festive bunting.
Hopefully the threat of thunderstorms is only that and we have a sunshiny day.

Sunny...

Today was one of those days that made me feel like I was on holiday. It was super nice and warm and all I wanted to do was bask in the sun. Sadly, I had work to do and spent all day dreaming about the fun I could be having. (sigh)
I did however manage to spend a little time outside (whoop) and saw this:

thought for today...

time is love.

Take on the ol' Time is Money phrase perhaps? I suppose the more time we spend doing stuff that we hate/away from loved ones/etc is more time wasted on things other than love. Or perhaps finding what you love takes time...am I reading too much into this?
Thoughts?

My Weekend...

This weekend I mainly worked but when I took a break it was a good one. My ol' pal E picked me up on his motorbike and we scooted up into the new territories. Our ride was quite an adventure; we snacked on luncheon meat noodles and milk (at an old Dairy Farm), saw a real life tortoise - he must've been a billion years old, oh and we almost drove into China...!

I also discovered how to do this hair...via here
